Cottagecore is a movement known for its calming side effects. You don’t even need a cozy cottage to start enjoying the slow-living lifestyle. Here is why, and how you can do it.
Cottagecore is here to stay and asking ourselves, WHY, reveals more than any other trend has done. It shows the state of our inner beings, dealing with anxiety on a daily basis in our modern society. It proves that slow living, cozy atmospheres, and pleasing aesthetics have a big impact on our mental health. To summarize, “Cottagecore” is a trend based on an idealized vision of a peaceful life in the countryside. (Who doesn’t want that?) If you are asking yourself, “How do I make my life more cottage-core?” we believe this post is for you. (This article includes affiliate links that support our blog.)

How do I make my life more cottagecore? Not everyone is fortunate to live in a cozy cottage. But who said that you need a cottage to be a part of Cottagecore? …We’ll teach you how!
Even if this aesthetic is based on the quintessential cottage life, there are ways to incorporate it into your life wherever you live. Valuing the old traditional ways for a new generation that seeks a quieter and simpler life than the one they were born into.
DITCH PLASTIC, USE A BASKET
We all know how awful plastic is for the environment so a great way to feel like a cottagecore queen (or king) is to switch plastic for natural and recyclable materials and go green. Use a cloth bag for shopping (or be hardcore and use a straw basket) and repurpose glass mason jars to store food, make iced tea, or store herbs. A straw basket is also the perfect, practical, and cute way to always be ready for a photo-worthy picnic.
MAKE YOUR OWN FOOD (and grow it too)
Making home-cooked meals, bread, and baked goods (FIKA) is the epitome of a cozy cottagecore life. If you have the means, grow your own vegetables or learn at least how to do some indoor gardening. If you for practical reasons can’t have a garden, try to support local farms and do your best to eat local and organic. If you can’t afford to entirely go organic just try to cover the products that you use most. If you enjoy an apple a day, why not strive to make that organic?
CONNECT WITH NATURE
Perhaps the biggest part of cottagecore life is to connect with nature and live by the flow of the seasons. Foraging for edible wildflowers it is a fun way to embrace the small things that grow. Yes, the flowers you pick will eventually wither in a few days, but that gives you a good reason to revisit nature, to bring home new and fresh flowers on a regular basis. If you don’t have a forest close by then bring plants into your home.
STOP FAST FASHION
Your clothing is a wonderful way to show the world who you are, but also your cottagecore style. Instead of buying from mega-stores, why not go to a thrift store and find something “one of a kind” or shop online for vintage products that give you that old-fashioned feel? If you’re handy with sewing you could even make your own dream wardrobe of flowy dresses and aprons. Oh, and bonus points if you are hanging your laundry on the line to dry. Let the laundry wave like a happy flag.

GET CRAFTY
A big aspect of cottagecore is returning to the craftsmanship and homemaking of the old days like knitting, pottery, and embroidery. We promise that baking mostly tastes much better than store-bought, which is a rule that is adaptable to all sorts of craftsmanship. That is because the flavor of reward is the best spice. Please visit “The Woodland Library” on Etsy for some cozy artwork created in our cottage.
CREATE A COZY HOME
Of course, the cottagecore life revolves around that cozy feeling it evokes. Even if you don’t live in a cozy cottage there are ways to create a peaceful space with decor that makes you happy, music that soothes you, and candles that warm your senses. It is so little that can make so much difference.
PRACTICE SELF-CARE
Cottagecore life is all about a slow and simple life. Strip away the unnecessary so you have more time do to what you love and take care of your well-being. It can be a daily yoga session, reading a book, or enjoying tea. Or, why not old fashion letter writing? It shows the receiver a little bit more of your care for them than a static “Times New Roman” font. Let the ink smudge, let the letters be skew, that is what makes it personal. My daughter Whitney just told me about the word “CottageCore” and I totally love it and get it now! It’s a mixture of all the good stuff. I want to do a styled-shoot at the farm with this look. Very interesting.

So glad I found your video on thrifting. You both are so darn cute! My husband and I moved into a sweet little “cottage “ in March, and I am having so much fun being crafty, and baking, and looking for treasures for our sweet little home.
I was born and raised in Anchorage Alaska. My father built our two story home. I called it the Primrose House, because of the name of our street.
I am waiting for the inspiration for the name of this little home.
I love watching your videos and reading your articles.
We live in TN and have many great opportunities for thrifting.
I’ll continue watching your great videos.
Happy Autumn 🍂
