VINTAGE CHRISTMAS DECOR IDEAS🎄How we make a Cottagecore Christmas🎀

The holidays are here, and our cozy cottage fully embraces the charm and warmth of a Vintage Cottagecore Christmas. There’s something magical about blending the old-world beauty of traditional Swedish and American holiday decor with the whimsical, rustic style of Cottagecore. From hand-crafted ornaments to nature-inspired touches, we’ve been gathering inspiration from our roots to create a festive atmosphere that feels nostalgic and timeless.

Join us as we share how we’re transforming our home into a holiday haven that perfectly captures the essence of a vintage Christmas—where every corner is filled with cozy comfort, natural beauty, and a little holiday magic.

When Christmas time approaches we are drawn more than ever to our cozy cottage. It is something Hallmark about a snow-covered little cottage and to fit the vintage Christmas vibe we are looking for there is no need for a big display.

Most of our vintage Christmas decor is second-hand, or simply handmade by family. Get a closer look at our YouTube video.

Our love for Cottagecore during the holidays leads us to seek inspiration from what is considered traditional Swedish folk decor, mixed with vintage American style. We believe these two aesthetics work beautifully together, as they complement each other in a calming, nostalgic way. So, why not draw inspiration from our different home countries?

Most of the items we decorate with are either thrifted or handmade by family in Sweden. The expression “If these walls could talk” perfectly fits the beautiful, old decor with its rich history. However, in our case, we could say, “If this decor could talk…”

I hope you find inspiration or ideas for your own festive decorations, no matter which holiday is special to you.

Merry Christmas & God Jul!

How do you get a Cottagecore Christmas? Here are some tips on how you can decorate!

Creating a Vintage Cottagecore Christmas look for your home is all about embracing the cozy, nostalgic, and handmade elements that evoke a sense of warmth, nature, and tradition. Here are some tips to help you transform your space into a charming, vintage-inspired holiday retreat:

1. Focus on Natural Elements

  • Pinecones, Twigs, and Evergreen Branches: Use fresh or dried greenery like pine branches, cedar, and holly to decorate your mantle, staircase, or as part of wreaths. Combine them with pinecones, twigs, or even dried flowers like lavender and eucalyptus for an earthy touch.
  • Dried Oranges and Apples: Slice oranges and apples thinly, then dry them to make garlands, ornaments, or simply scatter them around your space. Their natural, vintage look pairs perfectly with the Cottagecore aesthetic.

2. Opt for Handmade or Thrifted Decor

  • Handcrafted Ornaments: Look for vintage or handmade ornaments, whether it’s knitted snowflakes, crocheted stars, or small felt animals. Even making your own simple ornaments from fabric or dried flowers adds a personal touch.
  • Thrifted Finds: Vintage glass ornaments, old-fashioned tinsel, or retro Christmas cards can help give your home that well-worn, nostalgic vibe. Scour local thrift stores or family heirlooms for these special items.

3. Go for Soft, Muted Colors

  • Pastels and Neutrals: Soft, muted tones like cream, pale pink, sage green, and dusty blue work well for a Cottagecore Christmas. These colors create a soothing, timeless atmosphere that contrasts with the typical red and green of mainstream Christmas decor.
  • Warm Earthy Tones: Integrate shades of brown, rust, and gold to add warmth and a vintage feel. Vintage floral patterns on tablecloths, linens, or cushions can tie in these colors beautifully.

4. Create a Cozy Atmosphere with Textiles

  • Plaid and Checkered Patterns: Vintage plaid blankets or checkered table runners instantly evoke a sense of coziness and nostalgia. Drape them over chairs or use them as part of your tree skirt.
  • Knit Throw Blankets and Pillows: Soft, chunky knit throws in whites, creams, and soft greens can help to cozy up the space. Add vintage embroidered pillows or crochet accents for extra charm.

5. Vintage Lighting

  • Fairy Lights: Drape soft white fairy lights around your tree, mantel, or windows to create a twinkling, magical atmosphere. Avoid bright, modern LED lights in favor of warm white or even candlelit strings for a more rustic and nostalgic effect.
  • Candles and Lanterns: Use vintage-style candleholders or lanterns with real or faux candles. Beeswax or soy candles in earthy scents like pine, cinnamon, or clove will add a cozy, festive fragrance.

6. Rustic Tree Decorations

  • Wooden Ornaments and Natural Embellishments: Wooden ornaments, dried flowers, and little burlap ribbons are a perfect way to keep your Christmas tree natural and vintage-inspired. Consider using cinnamon sticks, cranberries, or twine to make your own tree garlands.
  • Simple, Rustic Tree Skirt: Instead of a traditional bright red or green skirt, use a simple, neutral-colored fabric, like linen or burlap, for a more grounded and rustic tree base.

7. DIY Craft Projects

  • Sew Your Own Stockings: Craft personalized Christmas stockings using fabric like linen, wool, or old sweaters. Add vintage lace, embroidery, or buttons to give them a homemade, one-of-a-kind feel.
  • Handmade Garland: Create garlands from popcorn, dried fruit, or even little fabric pouches filled with lavender or cinnamon. String them around your tree or drape across your mantelpiece for a charming touch.

8. Incorporate Vintage Holiday Scenes

  • Old Christmas Cards: Display vintage Christmas cards in frames or string them together as a garland. These old-fashioned designs add a personal, nostalgic feel to your home.
  • Vintage Santa Figures and Folk Art: Look for vintage figurines of Santa, reindeer, or snowmen. Folk art-inspired decorations, like hand-painted wooden pieces or stitched nativity scenes, add a rustic, nostalgic charm to your decor.

9. Use Wooden Accents

  • Wooden Toys: Incorporate vintage wooden toys like rocking horses, train sets, or wooden animals into your holiday displays. These nostalgic touches give your decor a charming, timeless feel.
  • Wooden Signs and Stencils: Simple wooden signs with vintage Christmas phrases or stenciled designs like “Merry Christmas” or “Season’s Greetings” can hang above the fireplace or on doorways to bring an extra touch of warmth.

10. Add the Finishing Touches

  • Wreaths and Swags: A simple evergreen wreath, possibly adorned with dried flowers or ribbons, is a quintessential vintage touch. Hang one on the front door or above your fireplace.
  • Vintage Lace: Use lace tablecloths or doilies on side tables or mantels for an elegant, vintage feel. Lace also works beautifully in homemade gift wrapping or as trim for stockings and decorations.
