If you want your Swedish visit to taste deliciously sweet you might want to visit Gränna. It is a vintage little picturesque town that makes it feel like walking in a real-life storybook. While here we also take the opportunity to learn more about Sweden’s finest Fairy Tale artist, John Bauer.
To enter Gränna is like to travel back in time into a small idyllic town with charm and friendliness. The main street of Gränna is lined with “Polkagris” cookeries where you can see for yourself how they make these striped delights that have become a traditional candy that most Swedes know by heart. The multitude of flavors makes it easy to love, find your favorites, and make Gränna “the Candyland of Sweden”.

Gränna came to be today’s true candy village because of a local thrifty woman. Thanks to her, Amalia Erikson, it is the sweetest spot you can explore when you visit Sweden.
We can thank Amalia Erikson for bringing the colorful old-fashioned candy to life. In the late 1850s, she received permission to start a bakery in Gränna to support herself as a widow and her daughter by making “polkagrisar”. The name of the little peppermint rock is said to have come from the polka dance that was very popular in the 1840s.

Gränna is more than just candy, it has an epic nature and exciting history.
Besides the candy, Gränna has more than just sweets to nurture all of your senses. On one side of this Swedish storybook town, you’ll see a stunning view over the 2nd largest lake in Sweden, “Vättern”. On the other side, a sensational mountain range spreads its way far into the distance leaving us with a dramatic awe over a place created this beautiful.
Visingsö – A true fairytale island, and its legend about the giant that once created it.
In the middle of the large lake lies the most charming “Visingsö island” that we decided to spend a couple of days on. The island carries a lot of historical importance and according to legend, a giant named “Vist” created “Visingsö island” when he threw a tuft of grass into “Lake Vättern” so that his wife would have something to step onto. For us humans though, the ferry has to do.

“Visingsö” offers many quaint cafes, restaurants, and museums, spread out on the whole island. You can bring your car, but as many visitors do, you can rent a bicycle to make this experience more special and take your time exploring the whole island.

While here, explore the art of Sweden’s finest fairytale illustrator, John Bauer.
While being in this region of Sweden, we can suggest a visit to the town of “Jönköping”. Here you can visit the museum of the beloved Swedish fairytale artist “John Bauer”. Perhaps most known for his illustration in the Swedish fairytale collection of stories called “Bland Tomtar och Troll” which was first released in 1907. Fairytale lovers and artists around the world can easily agree that Bauer’s unique style of his trolls influenced how we see them today.
