Dear Bygone Gals,
It’s back to school time again, in sweet September! Why do I always find myself wanting to dress like a gal in an ivy look college? I’ve been looking at Pinterest a lot lately for inspiration from women of the bygone eras. Real students and women who were scholars of their day. What struck me is that they all don’t have perfectly styled hair or makeup, and yet they look so sweet anyways.
I’m taking a page from their book this autumn for a more effortless and sensible style. This year I invested in a few new berets, blazers, cardigans, plain blouses, and a good pair of loafers to mix and match through the season. So simple yet so timeless (and comfortable!)
For some time I’ve been trying to build up my 1940s style wardrobe and realized I was still lacking a few staple pieces after losing a lot of weight from health reasons. Just like magic, my vintage fairy godmother stepped in. Let me introduce Maise of Hazy Days Clothing who was ever so kind to sponsor this post (and send me the dresses of my dreams!) Her dresses are drafted from vintage patterns and made to order to ensure the perfect fit. She was so kind to work with me on the sizing since I wasn’t sure with my weight fluctuating so much.
She has so many lovely patterns and colors to pick from to create a truly one of a kind piece! Her dresses are perfect for some one like me who is reluctant to jump straight into true vintage purchases; these look like the real deal yet have never been worn and will last for ages! Together, we decided on these two dress styles in more neutral colors so that it would ensure many outfit combinations to come! I adore how her dresses have a very authentic feeling without feeling like you’re wearing a costume or going to a 1940s reenactment. For these photos I chose to not over accessorize but try to mimic in my own way the carefree back to school looks. Yet, I can’t tell if I look more like a teacher than student! I’ll let you decide in this lookbook on our Charming YouTube channel at a local historic school house and library:
BLACKMORE DRESS | Look One
The Blackmore dress is from a 1940’s pattern that has been graded to modern sizes. It has the most darling covered buttons down the front with darted bodice creating a flattering waistline. I adore the square neckline and short puffed sleeves. Most of all, the front pockets have me swooning with their curious little V shape which really adds to the charm.
I styled it with dark brown loafers, belt, bag (and book naturally) and in contrast to the classic deep red color, this dress is so stunning yet casual. I know I’ll be able to dress it up or down easily all fall with cardigans and tights.

MAE TEA DRESS DRESS | Look Two
The Mae Teadress is one of the staples of the 1940’s wardrobe! Button up dress with matching covered buttons made with darted bodice with a wider notched collar. Short puffed sleeves with cuffs. I love the elasticated shirring at the back for comfort and mobility.
Maise helped me pick this dainty gray floral print that will fit for any season. I styled it with a gray beret and light brown belt and oxford style heels. I certainly felt like an art teacher on her lunch break tucked away in a quiet corner gathering inspiration.
