SWEDEN’S BEST HOT CHOCOLATE IN TROSA | Charming Archipelago Village

Most of us have at least once in our life time experienced the combo of hot cocoa indoors and a brewing winter storm outdoors. It is something soothing, comforting, and very selfcaring about it if you ask me. It makes you almost excited and happy when the storm is on its way. A perfect valid excuse to brew yourself a flavorful cup of hot chocolate.

“Any weather is tolerable as long as you have a cup of hot chocolate.”

In this post we are going sharing where we consider the best hot chocolate in the world is being served. It is in a small town that has the traditional Hallmark movie feeling over it. But first, let’s talk about where it all started.

Chocolate in mixed forms, such a delight!

Once upon a time in Mexico, way before any of the modern brands started to manufacture this warm drink, the Mayans were already drinking it. Around 500 BC the Mayans were clever to grind up cocoa seeds and mix it with water, some cornmeal, and chili. They drank it cold.

Europe had to wait more than 1000 year to be introduced to the flavors of cocoa. In the early 1500s, the Spanish explorer named Hernán Cortés brought cocoa beans on his way home to Europe. It became popular and it was during this time it started to be sweetened and served warm. In the 1700s London, they start to sell it in their time’s version of today’s coffee shops mixed with milk instead of water to be even more enjoyable than before. Fun fact: Did you know hot chocolate is also knows as “Chocolate Tea” in Nigeria?

I am sure there are many places that are qualified to carry the title World’s Best Hot Chocolate, it is a preference of taste I suppose. For me, the answer has always been easy, since we first enjoyed our best cups of chocolate in a small rural town near the Swedish ocean, called Trosa. Located less than an hour south of Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. Though the name literally translates to “underwear”, the town itself couldn’t be anything further from that description. As I wrote earlier, it could be taken from any Hallmark movie. It has the ocean, the old traditional houses, loads of little boutiques, and the feeling of a place for retreat and relaxation. On the main street lays the most charming cafe that is called “Marsipangården” (translated to English I would say “The Marzipan Cottage”.)

Handmade treats that will bring your happiness to new levels.

Not only do they make drinkable chocolate, but where ever you look there are displays and shelves filled with all kinds of chocolate confections. Pralines (see their guide) with “dreamy” cream, “crunshtastic” nuts, and “mochalishious” flavors. Some of them are solid dark, others have a soft-center with a hard surface that makes that lovely sound when it is being cracked between your teeth. There is also selections of tea and baked treats, suitable with a cup of coffee, or why not two?

The vintage feel is one touch that make this place so special to us!

When it comes to the hot cocoa there are multiple choices of flavors. We usually go for a raspberry or mint; both are creamy and rich in its flavor. I don’t know the secret, but I can tell the main ingredient is love. A visit here is self-care in its purest form and the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a true Swedish fika time.

Raspberry or Mint, the hardest question.

When our stomachs are filled up we always take a stroll next to the relaxing river bend pouring in from the archipelago; looking at boats, birds, and just let the sunbeams tickle us to satisfaction. It is a proven fact that this little bean makes people happy, and with the combination of the small-town charm of Trosa, it is not hard to understand that a place like this will always make us happy when we visit Sweden.
