NOWHERE TO GO BUT UP | Mary Poppins Returns Disneybound

Mary Poppins Returns Inspired Disneybound Silent Short Film

Dear Friends, if you loved “Mary Poppins Returns” as much as we did, we hope you’ll enjoy our vintage Disneybound and silent movie called “The Kite”.

Our silent movie is inspired by the song “There’s Nowhere To Go But UP!” that was one of many lovely soundtracks from the movie. We thought we’d share some fun facts and BTS of our silent movie since so much went into such a short film.

This year it was “Mary Poppins Returns” that inspired!

Originally, this was to be the 6th installment in our series inspired by Carl & Ellie’s theme song “Married Life” from Disney/Pixar’s “UP” where once a year we add a balloon to represent each year of our marriage and take them to a place that was special to us that year. Our 5-year video was our first silent film called “Married Life” but it was inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times” and the song “Smile” and the search we had been through of finding a place that feels like home. 2017 was the year we moved into Cobweb Cottage so it all fit together perfectly!

"Everything is possible, even the impossible"

As married life would have it, we’ve gotten a little behind with our balloon project so “The Kite” was actually filmed April 2019 (because we were behind from the previous fall 2018 since our wedding anniversary is 9/22) and it happened AGAIN that we didn’t film for our 7 year anniversary of 2019 because we should really learn our lesson that we’re always too busy in the fall during pumpkin season and Halloween in Sleepy Hollow. (Plus the more balloons the bigger the task!)

“There’s a different point of view awaiting you if you just look up.”

When “Mary Poppins Returns” came out December 2018, it instantly became one of our favorite films ever and we saw it in the theater 3x in one week! We didn’t intend to do a silent movie about it until a rather windy spring day in April, we saw how beautiful the trees were blooming and it reminded us of Cherry Tree Lane. So we came up with the concept, put the vintage Disneybound outfits together, and made the kite the day before we decided to film because we knew we couldn’t wait until after Lindsay came back from a trip to the Southwest (spring moves quick in NY and we didn’t want to miss out on the beautiful tulip magnolia blooms)

"Today or never, that's my motto!"

Our original concept was to do a “mashUP” of Mary Poppins with a nod to our original inspiration from “UP” but while we were filming the wind was so strong it broke Jonas’ kite and you can actually see Jonas’ real reaction for a few seconds followed by some “fake crying” for which he deserves a silent film award for his performance!

Let's Go Fly a Kite!”

Since the kite broke we had to improvise and change the whole story on the spot and that’s how we came up with having the kite fly with the balloons! We honestly can’t even remember our exact original video idea but we love that the story of how “The Kite” came to be is very much like the message we hope it spreads that there’s “Nowhere To Go But Up!” So, let’s call it a happy accident that it took us an entire year to put out this video because it feels like it was actually meant for such a time as this when people need something UPlifting more than ever!

What started as an anniversary project with balloons has sparked our love of making silent films and we have so many other ideas that we can’t wait to try. We’d love to hear what you think and hope you enjoyed the behind the scenes story!
